Police order crowded Art Van Furniture store to close early: ‘We could come close to a riot’

WARREN, MI - The liquidation sale at one of Michigan's many Art Van Furniture stores became chaotic this weekend and police had to step in and shut it down.

Warren police ordered the store on 14 Mile Road to shut its doors early on Saturday when crowds became unruly, the Associated Press said. The store closed at 4 p.m.

Fights were breaking out and there were traffic jams caused by people trying to get inside the store.

"It's too dangerous. ... We are shutting them down at 4 o'clock," Warren Mayor Jim Fouts said, according to the AP. "We could come close to a riot. I've never seen anything this bad."

Art Van, which is based in Warren, has announced it is closing all of its approximately 190 locations. Friday was the first day for liquidation sales at all Art Van Furniture, Art Van PureSleep and Scott Shuptrine Interiors in Michigan, Illinois, Ohio, Indiana and Missouri.

At the Warren store, there was also a shortage of employees to help the customers on Saturday, the mayor said.

"Employees are extremely mad and upset, and customers are extremely mad and upset," Fouts said, according to the AP.
